A&L Goodbody’s expertise covers direct and indirect taxation, as well as assisting multinationals with tax controversy, transfer pricing and tax planning of M&A. Peter Maher heads the practice.

At Arthur Cox, Fintan Clancy ‘provides succinct tax advice on corporate restructuring options’ and acted for Tyco International on its merger with Johnson Controls. Caroline Devlin, who is co-head of the practice with Clancy, advised a REIT on stamp duty issues arising from the acquisition of a property portfolio.

Matheson’s substantial team combines ‘great technical work with a commercial overlay’. Practice head Turlough Galvin is ‘never unprepared’ and is well versed in handling transfer pricing and cross-border tax disputes for multinationals. Gerry Thornton assisted Calmwater Asset Management with the establishment of a loan origination fund.

William Fry’s practice includes Sonya Manzor, who ‘devises well-thought-out tax strategies’ for clients such as King Digital Entertainment. International tax specialist Shane Wallace recently handled various real estate tax structuring and transfer pricing issues.

At Maples and Calder, practice head Andrew Quinn and William Fogarty handle a broad mix of work including tax planning of M&A, aviation finance and fund structures; Quinn advised CVC Credit Partners Group on the tax aspects of its establishment and structuring of a new collateralised loan obligation vehicle.

Ronan Daly Jermyn’s practice was enhanced by the addition of Julie Burke and Clare McGuinness, who joined the Dublin office as a result of the firm’s merger with JM Burke Tax Solicitors; Burke is recommended for revenue investigations work. Practice head John Cuddigan advises on direct and indirect tax, in addition to which the team has been active in tax appeals.

Walkers’ practice is led by Jonathan Sheehan, who is recommended for tax advice on real estate and fund structuring. The aviation sector is another area of strength, in which Sheehan handled the tax aspects of Bohai Leasing’s acquisition of Avolon Holdings. Petrina Smyth has ‘a fantastic knowledge of Irish tax law’.

McCann FitzGerald’s practice was boosted by the hire of Alan Heuston, who joined from Paddy Power Betfair. Clients include AIB and Ervia.

At Philip Lee, Gavin McGuire’s caseload includes corporate restructuring, M&A and advice in relation to disputes with the Office of the Revenue Commissioners. One mandate included advising on the tax aspects of Sigmoid Pharma’s acquisition of Freund Pharmatec.
