Jānis Zelmenis heads the team at BDO Law, which excels in tax and asset planning, compliance and audit matters. Managing partner Vita Liberte is handling Proks’ tax application to the State Revenue Service (SRS) and also advises on matters such as VAT and transfer pricing. Other clients include Extron Baltic and Dalita. Senior associate and tax consultant Gita Avotiņa is highly regarded. The firm can call on consultancy services through sister company BDO Latvia.

Cobalt provides ‘high-quality advice’ on tax structuring and related litigation. Girts Lejins, together with senior associate and tax consultant Sandija Novicka, represented DNB līzings in three cases against the SRS’ decision to deny DNB the right to deduct input tax. Indrikis Liepa heads the practice, which acts for leading companies such as Abbott Laboratories and Neste Latvija.

Ellex is ‘a leading firm’ in all manner of tax issues, including SRS disputes and VAT advisory work. Zinta Jansons, who ‘understands the corporate and business aspects’ of tax law, is advising Goodyear Dunlop Tires Baltic on natural resources tax, VAT on imported tyres and the structuring of its cross-border sales activities in Latvia. Johnson & Johnson and Sony Europe are major clients.

Sorainen was selected by Ramboll and Corit Advisory to conduct a study on behalf of The European Commission, which aimed to prevent aggressive tax planning, tax evasion and fraud. Jānis Taukačs heads the practice. Senior associate Aija Lasmane is another key figure in the team, which acts for clients such as Urbas Maschinenfabrik and Lone Star Germany Acquisitions.

Eversheds Sutherland Bitans is representing Samsung Electronics Baltics in three tax disputes with the SRS covering the refunding of input VAT, transfer pricing, corporate income tax and other complex issues. Multinational companies in industries such as telecoms, finance and manufacturing retain the firm. Senior partner Māris Vainovskis now heads the practice, in which Ilze Kramiņa is recommended. Jūlija Sauša left the firm.

At Kronbergs Cukste Derling, practice head Vineta Čukste-Jurjeva is acting for Latgard in litigation concerning VAT on goods exported to other EU countries. Valters Kronbergs is recommended.

At Primus, Attorneys at Law, tax consultant and specialist partner Ingūna Ābele has experience in cases against the SRS, as well as advice on VAT and personal income tax, among other matters. The group is representing Liepājas Osta in litigation with the SRS over VAT liability and community customs regulations.

At Rödl & Partner, associate partner and practice head Elīna Putniņa represented GfK Retail and Technology Baltic in a tax audit, which saw the tax authority question its right to deduct input VAT. Putniņa’s experience also includes transfer pricing and other cross-border work.

Tark Grunte Sutkiene defended Rīgas Dzirnavnieks in a tax investigation and subsequent court proceedings that focused on corporate income tax, transfer pricing and transactional issues. Experienced practice head Andra Rubene is recommended along with senior associate Nauris Grigals, who is ‘an excellent tax litigator’.

Vilgerts’ Edgars Koškins is advising Balcia Insurance on structuring its dividends flow and foreign holding structures in Malta and Cyprus. Invalda Lt and Nokia are new clients.
