Guido Derckx is noted for his ‘excellent technical skills’ and ‘practical advice’. Joost van Helvoirt and Vincent van der Lans were recently promoted to partner in 2016.

Allen & Overy LLP’s tax specialists often assist with the tax aspects of major financing and corporate transactions, as well as litigation. A multidisciplinary team including practice head Godfried Kinnegim and senior associate Marc Oostenbroek recently advised Asahi Group Holdings on its €2.5bn acquisition of Grolsch. John Brouwer focuses on tax planning for multinational companies.

Bird & Bird LLP’s ‘knowledgeable and proactive’ team is well known for work in the technology, life sciences and energy sectors, where the tax team works closely with the firm’s industry specialists. The ‘very experienced, balanced and calm’ Ernst Barten heads the practice; Brian Mulier leads the customs and trade group.

Clifford Chance’s Netherlands-based tax specialists form part of the firm’s wider international tax group and work in tandem with its corporate and finance experts in high-value deals. Clients include Gilde, ING Bank, Waterland and ABN AMRO. Michiel Sunderman is recommended.

With a global presence, DLA Piper is ‘well positioned to deal with a great variety of complex legal matters in the context of cross-border M&A’. The ‘highly skilled’ Paulus Merks is ‘extremely smart and creative’. Practice head and VAT specialist Daan Arends is also recommended.

The ‘extremely knowledgeable and pragmatic’ tax team at De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek advises on domestic and international corporate and finance transactions, recently including Shell’s acquisition of BG. The ‘extremely responsive’ Paul Sleurink is noted for his ‘breadth of experience’.

Independent tax firm Hamelink & Van Den Tooren is ‘an excellent choice both for specific tax advice and transactional tax matters’. Jan van den Tooren has ‘a vast wealth of hands-on tax knowledge’. Servaas van Dooren is also recommended and senior tax lawyer Marco Gomes Vale Viga joined from the Dutch Ministry of Finance in 2016.

Houthoff Buruma assists its corporate colleagues in major transactions and also has a buoyant standalone tax practice, with experience in contentious and non-contentious tax. ‘Skilled and experienced’ practice head Sylvia Dikmans’ ‘constant and close involvement gives clients a sense of security’. Rob Havenga also attracts praise. Alexander van der Voort Maarschalk is the key contact in tax litigation.

Taxation constitutes a key focus area at NautaDutilh, which advises on Benelux law in regional transactions. Chris Warner handles tax issues in the context of M&A and IPOs, and Nico Blom has an active practice advising on the tax aspects of a range of financing transactions. Tax litigator Léon Wijsman is another name to note.

The ‘very responsive’ tax specialists at Stibbe are ‘well versed in complex issues relating to multi-jurisdictional structuring and Dutch tax practice and procedure’. The team attracts a steady flow of mandates involving M&A, finance and real estate. Maarten de Bruin and Michael Molenaars are recommended.

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer is noted for its ‘international tax experience and capabilities that go beyond borders’. It handles a range of transactional and contentious tax matters. Eelco van der Stok heads the team and is recommended; former tax partner Machiel Lambooij was appointed consultant in May 2016.

Lodewijk Berger heads the practice at Jones Day, which is noted for its ‘strong business acumen, appropriate advice and good value’. It advises multinational companies and private equity firms on Dutch and EU tax matters, both standalone and in the context of large transactions.

The lean group at Linklaters is headed by the highly regarded Dick Hofland and maintains an active transactional and standalone tax practice. Longstanding clients include major financial institutions and private equity firms.

Norton Rose Fulbright is particularly strong in cross-border transactions, where it works alongside colleagues around its office network. In one recent example, a multi-office team that included Amsterdam-based Bart le Blanc advised an Egyptian company on the tax aspects of its acquisition of real estate in Brazil. Remco Smorenburg is also recommended.

Simmons & Simmons LLP has a balanced practice that takes in transactional, day-to-day advisory work and contentious matters. René van Eldonk and Peter Flipsen are the key figures in the team, which forms part of the firm’s broader financial markets practice.

The sizeable team at Taxand Netherlands is well versed in transactional, day-to-day advisory and contentious tax matters. Marc Sanders and Jimmie van der Zwaan are ‘internationally focused and demonstrate excellent business understanding’.

Ewout van Asbeck heads the team at Van Doorne. The tax practice often acts on real estate mandates, such as Rob de Win advising a European real estate investor on the tax aspects of numerous purchases.
