Cuatrecasas’ team provides ‘on-time, detailed and clear’ advice. The group represented Telefónica in corporate income tax disputes, and advised real estate and tourism group Imorey on increasing tax efficiency through a corporate reorganisation. Practice head Diogo Ortigão Ramos is ‘excellent in VAT matters’. Gonçalo Bastos Lopes and senior associates Tânia de Almeida Ferreira and Pedro Vidal Matos are also recommended.

Garrigues Portugal’s team handles indirect and corporate tax matters, as well as compliance work and disputes. It frequently advises on the tax aspects of large transactions, such as assisting Deutsche Bank with the acquisition of three Dolce Vita shopping centres by three different funds. Practice head Fernando Castro Silva, tax litigator Pedro Miguel Braz and principal associate Tiago Cassiano Neves, who manages the international tax practice, are the names to note.

Tax is a core practice area for Abreu Advogados, where the ‘dedicated’ team represented Diaverum in disputes concerning the deduction of interest charges in merger transactions. ‘Excellent lawyer’ Alexandra Courela and Pedro Pais de Almeida are the practice co-heads. Miguel Teixeira de Abreu is noted for his tax arbitration expertise, and Oporto-based Maria Dulce Soares is also recommended.

Uría Menéndez – Proença de Carvalho’s team focuses on transactional support and advised Bankinter on acquiring a large share of Barclays’ Portuguese business. Practice heads Filipe Romão and Marta Pontes are ‘brilliant lawyers with solid background and experience’. António Castro Caldas was promoted to counsel in 2016.

VdA – Vieira de Almeida’s Joaquim Pedro Lampreia scored a significant victory for Brisal and KBC Finance in claims against the Portuguese Republic before the European Court of Justice concerning a member state’s preclusion from imposing withholding tax on interest paid to EU-resident financial institutions. Practice head Tiago Marreiros Moreira and managing associate Conceição Gamito are also noted.

At ABBC – Azevedo Neves, Benjamim Mendes, Carvalho & Associados, ‘proactive, creative and focused’ litigator António Moura Portugal and Nuno Azevedo Neves jointly lead the department. The firm represented Eneop in a dispute concerning property tax. CPP Investment Board, Lufthansa and Sonae Sierra are also clients.

Patrick Dewerbe’s team at CMS successfully represented Generis in disputing adjustments made by tax authorities regarding the interest rate on shareholder loan agreements. At associate level, the ‘detail-oriented and creative’ Tiago Machado Graça, the ‘hands-on’ Raquel Montes Fernandes and Nuno Figueirôa Santos are recommended.

The ‘excellent’ team at Campos Ferreira, Sá Carneiro & Associados advises financial institutions on the tax aspects of corporate transactions. Arbitrator António Rocha Mendes is the key name.

Espanha e Associados advised several companies on tax issues pertaining to corporate restructurings and transactions. Tax boutique Ricardo da Palma Borges & Associados has been particularly active handling restructurings and transactions at national and international levels. The group provided a tax analysis for a local bank on the possibility of deducting its pension fund’s liabilities from corporate income tax. Managing partner Ricardo da Palma Borges and tax dispute resolution specialist Bruno Botelho Antunes are the key names.

SRS Advogados’ team advised Somague Concessões on the tax aspects of the sale of stakes in public concessions for the construction of five hospitals to Aberdeen Asset Management. Practice head João Maricoto Monteiro, counsel Paula Rosado Pereira and managing associate José Pedroso de Melo are recommended.

António Fernandes de Oliveira’s team at AFDO-adv is recognised for resolving tax disputes. It successfully represented a Portuguese company in arbitration concerning whether separate taxation qualified as corporate tax for profit assessment purposes.

Tiago Caiado Guerreiro’s team at Caiado Guerreiro & Associados advised property management firm Organização Tecnica Comercial e Industrial on municipal property tax and stamp tax to be paid on properties it owns and manages.

Macedo Vitorino & Associados advised Aberdeen Asset Management on tax aspects pertaining to the acquisition of stakes in three health sector PPP projects from Sacyr. André Dias is ‘very reliable’.

Oporto-based tax boutique Ramos Pereira e Sampaio – Sociedade de Advogados acts for clients including FC Porto and the Portuguese Business Association. Carlos Ramos Pereira and Rui Sampaio are the key names.

Raposo Bernardo is increasingly advising on fiscal restructurings. Practice head Frederica Marques Pinto, who is ‘very practical and service-oriented’, is advising retail chain Tiger on tax matters pertaining to franchising and supply agreements.
