Second to none’, the 11-partner tax team at Baker McKenzie is a led by Rodrigo Ogea and Esteban Raventós and ‘can take care of multi-jurisdictional projects with a truly international practice’. Highlights include advising Securitas Direct Verisure Group on the structuring of the €5.2bn sale of Bain Capital’s stake in the company to Hellman and Friedman. Active clients include El Corte Inglés, Altamar, and Tous.

Alejandro Escoda is head of the remarkable 70-partner team at Cuatrecasas. Recent highlights include advising Hispania Real on tax matters linked to its €660m acquisition of 21 hotels, two shopping centres and 213 homes and, in conjunction with Barceló Group, establishing an innovative hotel REIT. Other clients include Petrobras, Euskaltel and FC Barcelona. Carlos Ferrer and Carles Puig are both names to note.

Garrigues provides some of the ‘best value for money’ advice in the market, and its lawyers’ ‘high technical level inspires great confidence’. The firm’s growing network of offices in Latin America also gives it a strong edge for cross-border tax planning and structuring in the region. It recently advised CaixaBank on tax issues related to its takeover of Barclays Bank’s Spanish subsidiary. Eduardo Abad heads the popular team. Clients include Carrefour, BBCA and Parque Reunidos.

Uría Menéndez’s ‘excellent’ 13-partner team is commended for being ‘responsive and business driven’ with ‘reasonable fees’. Key partners include practice head Rafael Fuster, Jesús López Tello and Víctor Viana (who is praised for his ‘excellent customer service and technical strength’). Recent mandates saw the team advise Coca-Cola Iberian Partners on its three-way merger into a new Europe-wide bottler, Coca-Cola European Partners.

Ashurst LLP’s group head Eduardo Gracia has ‘deep knowledge of tax law and jurisprudence’, and together with Javier Hernandez Galante provides ‘high level advice’. The team advised on several real estate-related matters, recently, for clients including Hines, Castlelake and Benson Elliott.

Clifford Chance has an all-embracing ten-lawyer tax team headed by Pablo Serrano de Haro. It recently advised Banco Santander on tax issues aspects of real estate group Metrovasca’s €1.64bn share capital increase. Other clients include BBVA, Blackstone, TPG Special Situations and Autonomy Capital.

Led by Silvia Paternain, the team at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has a good reputation, particularly for capital markets and finance-related tax issues. The practice recently advised the lenders on tax issues arising from Nueva Pescanova’s refinancing.

Linklaters’ eight-lawyer team is led by the ‘brilliant’ Javier Garcia-Pita, who is praised for his ‘knowledge of international taxation’ and ‘adapts easily to the clients’ requirements’. Recent highlights include advising Abengoa on all the tax issues related to its restructuring. Clients include Permira, Banco Santander and Cerberus.

The well regarded tax team at Allen & Overy is directed by Carlos Albiñana who is praised for his ‘excellent technical ability’ and ‘enormous knowledge of tax issues’ (from which clients ‘draw great comfort’). The team recently advised Emperador Group on tax issues linked to its €558m acquisition of Torre Espacio.

Gómez-Acebo & Pombo Abogados advises a broad range of major companies and high-net-worth families. The five-partner team, led by Enrique Ortega, recently advised Oman Oil on the tax issues related to its sale of a 5% stake in Enagas. Other clients include Nike, Gas Natural, Repsol and Inditex.

The ‘resolute and efficient’ Nicolás Martín heads the team at Herbert Smith Freehills LLP, which recently advised Oaktree Capital Management on the tax structuring of its acquisition of Project Gaudi, a €740m commercial real estate loan portfolio. Of counsel Marta Esteban is singled out for her ‘availability and detailed advice’.

Led by Jordi Dominguez, Latham & Watkins LLP fields a highly-focused tax practice that is largely geared towards transactional work. A recent highlight involved advising Goldman Sachs and Marathon on the tax structuring of their credits in Promociones Habitat within the framework of the latter’s €1.45bn restructuring.

Pérez-Llorca gained a third tax partner in 2016, following the recruitment of Pablo Ulecia, who was previously a Director of the Financial Services Tax practice at KPMG Abogados. Recent highlights include advising E.ON on the tax aspects of the €2.5bn sale of its Spanish and Portuguese businesses. Clara Jiménez is another name to note. Javier Fernández Cuenca joined Lener.

Following the arrival of counsel Antonio Montero, the former Deputy Director General for Tax at the Ministry of Finance and Public Administration, CMS Albiñana y Suárez de Lezo is undertaking a lot more litigation work. Praised for his ‘extensive professional experience and empathy’, Montero is now department head.

DLA Piper LLP’s ‘excellent’ two-partner tax practice is led by Carlos Rodríguez, who ‘in addition to his impressive technical background also approaches problems with common sense and has a magnificent response time’. The firm recently advised Nazca Capital on the tax issues arising from its acquisition of stakes in Papizza, Sanagloria Bakery and Volapie Franchise. Miguel Baz is also recommended.

Founded in 2012, GTA Villamagna Abogados provides ‘accurate and practical advice’ and ‘stands out for its quality/price ratio’. Practice head Felipe Alonso and Jaime Ena ‘are always ready to provide solutions in a constructive and fast way’. Recent highlights include advising Grup Maritim TCB on the tax structuring of its €700m takeover by APM Terminals.

Hogan Lovells International LLP’s practice head Miguel Ángel Sánchez ‘stands out for his technical knowledge and experience in the sector’. Key recent mandates include advising Suramericana on issues related to its acquisition of Royal Sun Alliance’s Latin America business.

King & Wood Mallesons is noted for its experience advising private equity clients, where it has ‘total knowledge of the sector’. The firm recently advised EDP Renewables Europe on tax issues linked to the €550m sale of a 49% stake in its portfolio of wind farms. Team head Alberto Ruano is recommended for his ‘overall perspective and creativity’.

RCD – Rousaud Costas Duran has a dedicated wealth management team led by founding partner José María Durán, while Jorge Sarró heads the tax side. The firm works for high-net-worth individuals and companies on both contentious and non-contentious matters. Javier Triviño is the key contact for tax litigation.

Araoz & Rueda is recommended for its transactional tax-related advice. The team, which is led by Javier Prieto, recently advised Spanish assurance group ASEFA on the tax structure of a €50m land acquisition.

Former tax inspector Carlos Diéguez heads the well-regarded team at Broseta Abogados. The team has strong links to clients in Chile, Argentina and Switzerland, and is particularly known for its advice on cross-border tax structuring. Key clients include Vueling, Ford and Balearia.

Counsel José Ramón Vizcaíno heads a strong team at Dentons, which advises a mix of investment funds and corporations on their Spanish tax issues. A recent highlight was advising Kennedy Wilson on the tax structuring of its multimillion-euro acquisition of a retail centre in Madrid.

Roca Junyent provides a ‘comprehensive understanding of cross border transactions’ and is ‘up to date on new developments’. The five-partner team recently advised Reckitt Benckiser on tax issues linked to the division of its Spanish subsidiaries. Jordi Guarch Recaj heads the team, which also includes the ‘excellent adviser’ Juan Alberto Urrengoechea and Blanca Usón Vegas.
