The standalone tax practice at Ferrere is ‘by far the most serious and experienced in Uruguay’, sources report. Led by the ‘100% tax expert’ Gianni Gutiérrez, the team relies on the experience of counsel Alberto Varela and a second line of recommended senior associates including Isabel Laventure, María Laura Caffera and Beatriz Pisano. Recent mandates include representing several free trade zone companies in a dispute with the tax administration regarding the scope of permitted activities within the Free Trade Zone Law. Key clients include Mitsui OSK Lines, Archer Daniels Midland and Bimbo.

Guyer & Regules’ ‘superb’ tax practice is led by Juan Manuel Albacete, who is praised for his ‘exceptional experience, common sense and commitment’. 2015 mandates included advising Citibank on the tax aspects of a $200m loan to the Bank of the Republic of Uruguay, and advising Total and Tullow on the most secure and efficient tax structure for participation in the Ronda II competitive bidding round for oil exploration licenses. Also noted are ‘gifted’ senior tax lawyer Juan Bonet; tax disputes specialist Gastón Lapaz and tax advice focused Ignacio Pérez, whose clients include Citi, Unilever, Montes del Plata and Total.

Bergstein is described by clients as a ‘small firm in a small country that provides services comparable to a big firm in a major jurisdiction’. Well known for its tax expertise, the team – led by the ‘succinct and creative problem-solver’ Jonás Bergstein and the ‘excellent’ Domingo Pereira – receives a steady flow of mandates from clients including Abbott Laboratories, Amadeus and Man Investment.

Hughes & Hughes has solid experience in national and international tax issues. The team – led by Fernando Barrios and public accountant Miguel Rocca – has recently been providing advice on income and capital taxation to BNP Paribas, particularly in relation to the implications of a projected cross-border derivatives transaction.

Posadas, Posadas & Vecino’s tax advice covers international taxation and individual tax planning for both foreign and local clients. Eduardo Ferrari’s recent caseload includes advising real estate developer RUNTUNA (La Tahona) on the tax aspects of the issuance of $20m in convertible current bonds to purchase new land for the development of private neighbourhoods. Raúl Vairo heads the practice.
